The Witcomb Collection — owned by the National General Archive — is the most comprehensive visual record of Argentina. It includes beautiful images of the country’s life: portraits of notable figures, landscapes, public and private buildings, factory work; the countryside, the mountains, and a vast reflection of everyday urban life.
In this first volume, Sara Facio has selected a series of previously unpublished photographs of children and families, taken at the Witcomb Studio around 1900.
This series is presumably the work of Alejandro S. Witcomb, founder of the nearly century-old commercial firm. The English pioneer arrived in Buenos Aires in 1878, and in 1880 opened his studio on Florida Street, which became the most prestigious of its time due to the quality of its work.
LA AZOTEA Editorial Fotográfica presents Witcomb, Our Yesteryear as a tribute to someone who can be considered the first great photographer of Argentina.
