Description

“Perhaps presence is not a quality or property of things, but rather the act through which a thing is presented and set in opposition to its own nature as a thing, as well as to everything that connects it with the world.”

The project presents several diptychs composed of one direct photograph and another synthesized from the first, sometimes mediated by a text. We simultaneously see a before and an after. The narrative helps us compose a story, to establish a cause-and-effect association between the two photographs.

The texts make explicit the reason for choosing the portrayed individuals and include a quote from those who posed for the photograph: the emigrant writes about distance, the boxer defines himself as such, and the cardiac surgeon reflects on the heart, seeking to inscribe a subjective point of view within “objective reality.” However, the last word lies in the images (within them).

In that space, meanings are multiple, words do not reign, and the present cannot be considered the boundary between past and future. Everything then seems marked by the eternal return of the same. By making the present pure, it reveals the magical nature of time as it is bound to the image.
