If Adriana Lestido's name transcends as one of Argentina's most personal artists, it is due to her almost secretive work, in an elective clandestinity that immunizes her from the prestige systems of the cultural establishment. It is no coincidence, then, that "Mujeres presas" (Imprisoned Women), this book that is only now being reissued, was the first to bring together a series of her work. The postponement may be due to her searing and non-commercial gaze, to her iconoclastic attitude that connects pain with the personal and the collective. Her images, as intimidating as they are poetic, do not require annotations. It is impressive to realize that everything that can be said about these photos (loneliness, resentment, distrust, defiance, bitterness, love) is said better by the images themselves.
