Macotela, Gabriel

Gabriel Macotela trained in painting and sculpture at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, and later at Gilberto Aceves' workshop and the San Carlos National School of Plastic Arts. He was part of the "Suma" group, founded in 1977; together with Armando Sáenz and Yani Pecanis, he created the Cocina editions, and later, in 1985, the alternative bookstore El Archivero. He presented his first solo exhibition in 1976 at the Casa del Lago in Mexico. He later exhibited at the Pecanis Gallery from 1978 to 1987, at the Juan Martín Gallery from 1990 to 1995, at the Carrillo Gil Museum in 1983 and 1997, at the Museum of Modern Art of Mexico City in 1986, and at the Rufino Tamayo Museum in 1988. Additionally, he participated in multiple group exhibitions in Mexico and around the world: the United States, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Greece, and India.
