Description
Guillermo Montesinos Pastor (1877-1925), a notable cellist and amateur photographer, captured remarkable landscapes. According to Andrés Garay and Jorge Villacorta, editors of the book that presents Montesinos Pastor's work for the first time, we are witnessing "the first Peruvian creator of a purely expressive vision with an individual interiority focused on landscapes." Unlike his contemporary photographers such as Max T. Vargas, Emilio Díaz, or the Vargas brothers, Montesinos was not involved in the commercial use of photography. He turned to photography solely to express his contemplative spirit in the countryside of Arequipa, with its backdrop of breathtaking volcanoes, skies, and clouds, as well as within the confines of his own home. Ultimately, Montesinos was a solitary and free photographer in nature, a discreet and silent observer who passionately worked in the private sphere.
